Is there any way to determine which version of this game you're getting just by looking at the box? I prefer The first version, with Spider-Man turning into Batman, and the Rambo lookalikes etc.

I don't think so. I think the version change was done secretly.

I think the only way to really know is by the info that appears on the start screen. If there's a Marvel Comics trademark, then it's the later version, with the bone Godzilla and no Batman.
i could never get from out the maze in the last level i did when i played it befor but now i can't get out that level
I love Shadow Dancer!"
well, the Sega Classics version definately IS NOT the first, so you can automatically count those out.
ive got that one with the marvel trade marks,i found that strange but obvious when i saw spidey. The game still owns hard.
Anyone know if Super Shinobi (Japanese Revenge) was ever changed to edit out Godzilla and Batman? There were TONS of movie references in the original version.
Probably not as most Mega Drive games in Japan weren't in production very long, and I don't think Super Shinobi was that popular there even as far as MD games go.Originally Posted by Joe Redifer
Well, it's an early game, so it has no country protection, but if you play it in a US genesis you'll get the US title, but in a Japanese system, the japanese title.

I couldnt play the game,it was to hard for me,thanx to ben shinobi i finished the game yes.Shinobi owns.
On the contrary. The Mega Drive had a small cult following in the East. The big challenge for Sega in 1989 was to crack 'Nintendo-land', they wouldn't give up on the country. Just because the Super Famicom won out in the end doesn't mean the Mega Drive was an automatic failure in Japan, it just sold to a smaller group. I think the average figures were that Sega shared a third of the market with Nintendo and NEC at their worst in Japan, so it wasn't all doom and gloom.Originally Posted by j_factor
IIRC, the reason only the earliest revisions of RoS have the movie references is licensing issues - Marvel licensed the characters for only a short while before pulling out. Hence, all later versions don't have the Marvel blessing and Marvel references like Spider-Man.

So what other movie refrences are there besides Batman, Godzilla and Spiderman?
Any pix of Bone Godzilla?

Well, there are enemies who look just like Rambo, and a boss that looks like The Terminator in addition to all the other one mentioned above.
I believe the same thing happens when you cart-swap it, too. I forget the other game you need...MERCS, maybe?Originally Posted by David J.
Revenge of Shinobi: Access the Japanese Title Screen
Insert any game into the Genesis. Remove it (no particular screen required) without powering off the system. Insert Revenge of Shinobi and press reset. You'll now see the Japanese Super Shinobi title screen!
I'll whip out the ghey genny 3 and give it a test.
