    Default King Colossus: Tougi Ou

With a full English patch by MIJET, the Mega Drive action/RPG King Colossus can finally be enjoyed by those who don't speak Japanese. Some would say that it bears more than a passing resemblance to Falcom's flagship franchise Ys, and that might be so, but it also copied the quality gameplay and fun quest, so it's all good! Our full report inside.

I just beat it yesterday, and I can't figure why they didn't release the game over here. While I wouldn't call it great, it is a good game that definitely deserved release over here. My main gripes with the game is that the levels lacked much in terms of puzzles and that bosses were largely pushovers. Most bosses could be easily defeated by activating the aura shield and spazzing out on them. The weapon system on the other hand was pretty snazzy, though I found the bows to be practically worthless.

A: Make sure your ROM file is not in an interleaved format.

What does this mean? I'm swedish, and I can't get this to work on either gens or kega. Do I need to add a header or something, maybe change the extension? But how? The file is named King Colossus (J).bin and is 1024 kb in size.

Shouldn't this have been a Hacks and Homebrews feature?

That's sort of a grey area, I'd say.. the only major modification to the game was the English translation. ..and there are other reviews here of Japanese-only games, so the only difference here is that the reviewer could partake in some good ol' fashioned reading and comprehension.

I'd say it belongs as a review, and a fine one at that.

Ok, since I had to reformat my PC, I lost my patched file. Could someone PM me one?

Well just picked the rom and patch up and started playing. So far me likes Kinda like a Secret of Mana/Evermore/Zelda/Landstalker type game. I'll post when I'm done.

I just beat this game. I've been playing it on and off for a week. I got lost here and there so I leveled up too fast where I was maxed out before the last two castles. Some of the moving platforms were tuff. The bosses were fairly easy. Most of the game the Morning Star is the easiest weapon to use. For the use of the MP I just used the Aura Shield for the bosses. The Shining Sword I used for the last boss. He wasn't too hard. I beat him on the second try. On the third try I still had half of my life left and enough MP for one more Aura Shield. The ending isn't too epic. Out of the endings, I prefer the "say yes" option.

That the SNES was the system to go when it came to all kinds of J-RPGs is more a obvious statement than a personal opinion. But, and repeating that RPGs are a genre I don't tend to like, did we Sega dudes and gals get good J-RPGs?

Hell, yea. Maybe not historic masterpieces other than the Phantasy Star series, but we got several notable-to-excellent ones.

But some of them, like this one or Nadia, Secret of the Blue Water, never left Japan.

    Oh, noes.

But over the years, our dedicated bedroom [and some awesome professional] coders from the Scene have inspected almost every nook and cranny to bring us the things we missed during our youth, and this KC (sans The Sunshine Band) is convincing as it can be: an action-packed dungeon crawler with platforming touches here and there with big sprites (for a game of its type, that is), functional maps, good sound and responsive controls. It won't change any gamer's life, but sure it's enjoyable.

BTW, it's a shame that we can't kill the cranky old bastard that guides the protagonist. I hate him with a passion.
