@jesusarnold:
Well, I guess I need to explain some things. Nintendo was getting much more popular where I lived (they already had a big fan base in Sweden since the NES days) after games like Star Fox and Donkey Kong Country were released, and since I got the console so late I had about 4 years of gaming to catch up on.
The different feel of snes games in general, the sample based sound chip and the quality of the exlusive titles I mentioned earlier made it seem like a different "scene" was made accesible to me. I didn't even know about some of the more impressive late era MD titles until much later, because the 32-bit era was just around the corner..
Of course I did play Sonic 3 and thought it looked great, but I didn't like the changes in the gameplay at all. I guess that's when I first started to lose interest in the MD.
As for Metroid equivalents.. This is a bit far fetched gameplay-wise but when I played the Ecco games, they put me in a similar mood as when playing Metroid. The feeling of isolation combined with dark, brooding music makes for a similar experience.
The Monster World games are much closer in other aspects though, as is Flashback.
