Revenge of Shinobi is an excellent game. But without a doubt the hardest game to get the good ending period.
It's not even that hard to get the good ending. All you need is a power-up and at least two ninjitsu charges when you face the final boss. There is a (not so) secret passage in the maze that contains both pickups, and then there's at least two more power-ups to be found, in case you get hit by an enemy along the way. With a bit of careful pickup management, I managed to get the good ending on the second time I finished the game.
I'm probably the only one on this forum who does not enjoy Revenge of Shinobi.
What is it about the game you don't like, exactly? The incredible level design? The awesome soundtrack? The excellent graphics and terrific gameplay? The lack of a run option?
I'd encourage you to give the game another shot, as I get the feeling that you haven't gotten very far past the first stage (if that). No offense intended, but to be honest the game didn't really start impressing me until I got to the second stage. By then I was hooked, and basically the rest of it is just balls-out awesome. It's just an incredible game all around and it's hard for me to believe that anyone who played for more than say 30 minutes wouldn't be absolutely sold on the game forever.
Just beat this game for the first time, probably my favorite genesis game. Didn't get the good ending, but there will be other days! Just haven't figured out how to beat the last boss fast enough...
I can't even do it even with a Game Genie
Well, Devil-N describes how to do it--the problem so far for me has been getting to the final boss with two ninjitsu charges--I almost always need to use one in 8-1 so they don't shoot me into the water. So, when I get the extra one in 8-2, that is the only one I have.
Actually, I just realized something while reading this. The reason I don't have two ninjitsu charges for the boss is because I never die in 8-2. So, I died on purpose, beat the last boss and got the good ending. Life (or I guess, death in this case?) is good![]()
You don't need two ninjitsus to beat the final boss. Hell, if you're really good, you don't need any (not that I fall into that category). His hair projectile is legitimately avoidable. Basically, he throws his hair wherever you are at the moment he decides to throw it, so if you time a jump just right, you can dodge it by simply letting yourself fall to the ground (jumping away from him makes it easier). Similarly, you can wait until the last possible moment on the ground and then jump over his hair.
A couple good things to know:
1. After you finish the maze but before you go through the exit, there's a hidden "POW" off to the left (do a double-jump multi-shuriken shot to reveal it).
2. At the leftmost part of the screen during the boss (as well as the right, I think), there's a square that, if shot with a shuriken, momentarily slows/stops the crushing mechanism.
Presumably you just don't know how to attack him. All you need to do is wait for him to get close to you (crouch to avoid getting hit), at which point he'll attempt to sort of "stab" you with his hair (which will miss you since you're crouching), leaving himself open for a shuriken/kick/blade swipe. After taking a hit, he then throws his hair at you, which is difficult to dodge, but not impossible.
Wow, I never knew this was considered a difficult game. This was the third Genesis game I ever owned behind Sonic 1 and Spider-man. I bought it for $5 from a neighbor kid when I was 10 or 11. I've beat the game over and over since I was a kid. The most difficult thing for me is to have the time to sit down and beat it. It takes a while.
There are two, one on each side of the screen.
I never cared much for Revenge of Shinobi myself. On the other hand, I could play Shadow Dancer all day long.
Haven't played Shadow Dancer yet (looking forward to it)--and while Shinobi 3 is a very good game, it isn't as good as Revenge in my opinion. The music alone puts ROS in another class altogether--add probably the greatest combination of bosses ever and great level design--well, it's no contest really.
