No she doesn't.
Streets of Rage is awesome, piss easy (until the cheap final boss), but so awesome. As a kid this was one of my gaming loves, although time has not been kind to it and the sequels surpass it, there is something harsh and gritty about the first game that isn't replecated in the sequels. The music is awesome and the pepper pots are fantastically pointless. I love this game, Stage 4 is amazing.
6.0 was too harsh IMO. Yeah, sure SOR1's not as advanced as the other two games, but its a classic and was considered good back in the day. Plus, I personally love SOR 1's soundtrack a bit more than SOR 2's and BKIII/SOR3's.
IŽll just basically repeat what I put in my mini review:
This really is a great game, IŽll take this over the over rated Final Fight CD anytime.
This game has the playability, the sound, graphics and the atmosphere, it really is the total package but still under rated by many.
The mega games 2 cart was just so awesome! Streets of rage, golden axe and revenge of shinobi, pure classics.
Streets of Rage 1 is a great beat 'em up. The visual style and music make for a gritty urban scene that has tons of character and atmosphere. When I play it, it's almost as if I'm being transported to this urban decay. It's really that engaging for me.![]()
Babies...the unfortunate by-product of a good time.
I've been playing both SOR 1&2 this week and I really appreciate the series. I agree the original has a special atmosphere that is all unique to itself.
The one big problem with SOR 1, IMO, is that increasing the difficulty only makes the game cheap rather than challenging. Enemy bosses can just kill you quicker, particularly the evil Blaze twins. Also, I can't figure you how to beat the game with Adam Hunter, on account of his low speed makes it almost impossible for me to land hits on the fire-breathing fat guy and the Blaze twins.
The review is laughable....this is a 9/10! Had lots of fun with 2 player mode.
The original Streets of Rage was a pretty friggin' sweet beat-'em-up in my opinion. I like the graphics, the music, the sound effects, the gameplay and control button set-up options. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.
Here are some cheat codes for the game.
Additional Continues
Press Left, Left, B, B, B, C, C, C, Start on the title screen.
Stage and Lives Select
Go to the main menu. Hold A + B + C + Right on controller 2. While still holding those buttons, press Start while highlighting Options with controller 1. You can now select what stage you want to begin the game on and how many lives you start with.
Unlock Easiest and Manic modes
Hold A + B on controller 2 and press Start on controller 1 on the title screen.
Even though SoR2 is the overall better game, I think the first Streets of Rage really shines in terms of atmosphere. Much as I absolutely love some of SoR2 stages (particularly the boardwalk/amusement park and baseball stadium!), the first game keeps it a little more gritty and grounded, and I like that. Also, I know it's up for discussion, but I really do feel that the first game has the superior soundtrack.
Basically what I'm trying to get at here is while SoR2 improves on a number of things from the first game, it certainly does not make the first Streets title obsolete; both games are equally worthy of being in a serious Genesis collection!
This ^
For me when it first came out SOR was a 10/10 game but it was then surpassed by its incredible sequal (for me the best game ever made) but I would still only reduce the rating to a 9/10 because SOR set a new standard for beat 'em ups that all future ones would be judged by.
To be this good takes AGES, to be this good takes SEGA!
I agree with a 7.5, Its a damn solid game with amazing music (imo the best music on the entire console)
and great background settings (yes sor2 was strange at times when it came to backgrounds)
SOR1's only problem is that it already looked graphically dated when it came out, which is pretty much its only defect.
