    Default Your favorite unknown/underated bands.

I need some new music. Anyone here have any bands they love but no one else seems to? I could really use some suggestions. I listen to just about anything. A few to start.

The Meanies- From Australia. Maybe they were big there. No one knows who the hell they are here and they freaking rock.

Vast- Not sure how to explain just really good, lots of depth.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

    Tangerine Dream

    Ultravox

    Travis & Fripp

    Japan/David Sylvian

Here is some Japan for you:

Here is some Nick Cave (post Punk dude...his first band the Birthday party is a little too crazy for me...)

Here is Sylvian solo (ignore the video it's a user vid):

My taste doesn't really drift too far out of mainstream, but the most obscure band I like is Shiny Toy Guns. The lyrics are pretty terrible, but I like the music & the vocals.

Another flash-in-the-pan band I was into a few years back was Ra. They had a single on the radio that was pretty awesome (to me, at least). The entire album was honestly pretty solid, which is why I'm suprised there wasn't a follow-up.

Nothing I listen to (aside from maybe Weezer) is mainstream. Just about every band I listen to is on an Indy label and never will be on the radio. I suppose if I had to pick a band that could/should be on the radio, I would pick Alkaline Trio.

    GASLIGHT ANTHEM!

Now that that's out of the way.....

Ra had some internal problems I think, but I thought I heard of them working again recently.

And I agree on Shiny Toy Guns.

Don't have much time though or I'd list more lesser known bands I've been enjoying.

I wouldn't exactly call Shiny Toy Guns obscure. I think they are a somewhat well known band in the mainstream music world today!

A few bands I'd recommend are:

Blue In Heaven (Their first album is jawsum, but their second one kinda blows) The Chameleons, Abecedarians, Killing Joke (anything after Night Time is crap), Modern Eon, Saigon,... just to name a few.

I'm gonna throw Moke out there, even though it's been since 2000 I think that the last album even came out. It's awesome as fuck though.

Yeah I read it. Describing the band obscure wasn't exactly the right word to explain them. Hell my little sister knows about them! Ever heard of Asylum Party? Now those guys are really obscure!

You may have read my post, but you misunderstood it. I wasn't saying that Shiny Toy Guns were obscure, but they are compared to the rest of the stuff I listen to.

The Lawrence Arms, The Falcon (which is basically the Lawrence Arms with the bassist from Alkaline Trio), and Streetlight Manifesto are some of my favorites along with Alkaline Trio and Against Me!, but I think those last 2 bands have built up enough of a fan base to be considered mainstream nowadays.

And MrMatthews, relax. He was merely stating his perception of what "obscure" is relative to yours. Nothing to get critical over.

I listen to those bands except Travis & Fripp, since I don't who they are. I actually prefer Ultravox when John Foxx was their singer. I don't think Midge Ure compares. Mr. Matthews I apologize for that recent post. I can be kind of an elitist when it comes to music.
