Default CD model 2 won't spin up

Not mine, a person at atariage needs some help on this one. Link and post

    http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=139735&hl=

I just received from Ebay a Sega CD 2. When I connected it up to my Genesis 2, plugged in both power cords and hit the power button I see on the tv the Sega cd screen with music playing. A message on screen says to insert a cd. No matter what cd I try (Sega cd or music cd) I get a message after a few moments to push start. I push start and now I'm looking at a screen that looks like a cd player (start, stop, forward buttons, etc) with the message to insert a cd. I decided to disconnect everything (what do I have to lose at this point) and remove the screws from the bottom of the cd player. Upon watching it function while opened carefully with the sega genesis connected and power reconnected, I noticed that the disc does not spin at all. If I move the laser lens manually away from the disc I can hear it moving back into place all the while the disc sits idle. Could the motor that spins the cd be bad? How hard is it to find this part? Has anyone taken one of these apart and fixed it? Most of the problems that I read in regards to this model seem to do with a fuse. I can't see how this fuse is bad on my unit as it's powering up but not spining the disc.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I know nothing about modding but going by the description, it sounds entierly the motors fault.

This is what I told him. Is there a replacement part number to get a new motor? I may need one of these soon, too, so it's good to stock up. I have heard quite a few people with similar issues-- not the grinding fault, but just not spinning.

its either dead motor or dead motor controller chip... both faults go together usually, when motor is dead, most likely the controller is too. Solution : drive replacement

it won't turn on with the system opened, there is a switch activated by the closed lid as a safety mechanism. Also, even if you were to flip the switch, many CD systems won't activate the spindle if the laser can't detect a disc (I guess another safety mechanism).

In my experience with model 2 Sega CDs and this problem, it is usually the fault of a 3rd party power supply that doesn't output enough power. Make sure he is using the official Sega MK-1203 or whatever the Model 1 Genesis power unit model number is (I keep forgetting). It should be 9V 1.2A, I know that much.

The likelihood of a dead spindle motor is EXTREMELY low, that is the LAST thing that should go out on a Sega CD considering its a 1X drive. XBOX 360 on the other hand, those things go out every other day, lol. (good job Microsoft, put a 1000000X drive right over the hottest chip on the board, dumbasses)

thanks for the replies, I have passed it all along so far.

17days, I've had drive motors go out a lot in different devices that use them, so I can't discount it yet. Hopefully it can be replaced if that is the problem-- I really am hoping it's a bad power supply. Make it simple.

Drive replacement...groan, that's a pain. CD's are rare enough as it is, to find a pull would be impossible (while not sacrificing a whole CD unit). Here's to praying for spare parts to fall from somewhere.

Default cd model 2 won't spin up

    Hi guys,

I'm the unlucky owner of the broken sega 2 for which this thread started. First off, thank you Nathan for directing me here and trying to help me out. Second, thank you to everyone with all the suggestions.
Well, I did recently have to purchase off of Ebay a power supply for my Sega cd 2 as it didn't come with one. Upon close inspection it is the official Sega 1power supply 9v, 1.2a so I'd be surprised if this is bad. I unfortunately don't have access to a 2nd power supply to rule out that mine is bad. Do you guys think that if I could get a Sega cd 2 on Ebay that is being advertised as broke/as is/for parts for around $20 would you suggest I buy one? I'm curious if for this price I would be able to swap out parts and possibly get mine working? I realize the big question is which parts do I need?
    Thanks

I know drive spindles do fail/lock up all the time (XBOX 360, HELLO! lol), but that's usually in newer, fast drives that run much hotter. I don't think I've ever seen a 1X drive fail because of the drive motor unless something terrible was done to it (spilled drink, mold, physical damage, etc. not normal wear).

First off, open up your Sega CD and see which version you have. I believe there are 3 version of the Model 2 as far as drive configurations are concerned: the earliest that connects the drive via seperate wires, the second that had a Sony drive connected via ribbon cables (identifiable by a brown circuit board and a pure metal spindle), and the third which is a JVC connected with ribbon cables (green circuit board and a small black ring around the metal part of the spindle).

I believe all would be swappable, but the first is probably A) rare and B) would require soldering. I was lucky and there just so happened to be a Sega CD with a dead motherboard that I used to pull my drive from (the one I had worked, but the gears were slightly broken and it made horrible grinding sounds alot, it was pretty bad).

Here's a video of me replacing mine:

Default sega cd model 2 won't spin up

    Hi 17days,

I watched your video and that is not the model that I have. The laser in my unit has wires that run underneath the board and they all meet through a circular piece of metal (almost reminds of a magnet). From there they go their seperate ways to the main board. So, does this sound like I have the third revision of the SegaCD? Does this information mean it would be easy or difficult to replace/fix?

no, if its wires, that's the first. I would assume that it is the most difficult to replace. I haven't actually seen what the first revision looks like, only heard about it, the 2nd and 3rd look nearly identical aside from a few small differences (color of PCB and what the spindle looks like where you put the disc). Mine was the 2nd version. Take some pictures (CLEAR and FOCUSED, use the Macro or "up close" function on your camera and use the flash) and I might be able to tell if its fixeable/replaceable or not. Before going through all that, first see if your "lid closed" detection switch is present/working, it should be behind the drive to the left (if looking at it from the front of the system) where the hinge of the lid can hit it. Its a tall, thin copper piece.

    Thanks

get a photobucket account or use one of those other photo upload sites (can't think of any at the moment) and just grab the "Direct Link" image URL and copy and paste it into the dialogue box after clicking the little picture of mountains on the formatting toolbar.

Here are the close-up pictures of my SegaCD. I hope these pictures help determine what version I have. I guess my question based on these pictures would be is this fixable? Should I pursue buying a dead unit from Ebay and trying to swap this lens with that one? Does anyone have parts they could sell me?
    Thanks

definitely the 1st gen, supposedly the one with highest reliability (evildragon was wrong...). From what I understand, they are QUITE uncommon so getting one off of eBay would be really hard to do. Do you see that big plastic rectangular prism near the back of the console sticking up out of the metal? That's the switch the system uses to detect that the lid is closed. Try booting it up and pushing that switch with your finger and see if anything happens. Does the spindle spin freely with your finger? If its not locked or nearly locked (feels very heavy like a Hi Fi volume knob) and spins with ease its probably either the "lid closed" switch or a wire messed up somewhere. I think your drive is fixeable, its just a matter of finding where the damage is.
