3-button standard Sega brand controller for Sonic games
6-button Sega brand controller for all others

I also use the 3-button controller for many Atari and ColecoVision games too

I'm mainly using my MD 6button pad because it ensures my MD stuff will be 6button compatible... I'd be using the 3 button pad otherwise. I love both pads

I've got two of them for some great wireless two player action.

The 6 Button Official Sega is #2 after the wireless.

I love the standard 6 button controller, but I love the 3 button also. Both are great controllers. I really want the wireless 6 buttons though.

Standard 6 button is the best.
I'm fond of the Classic 3 button original when playing old stuff like GnG and Mystic Defender...Why? I don't know.

I scored 4 brand new Sega MK-1470 pads on ebay last year for cheap. The 6 grey buttons, turbo/slow switch in the middle.

Nothing wrong with them, they go well with spare consoles that I drop in front of friends every once and a while to let them relive the olden days properly.

I actually have a six-button joystick controller. Once you try one, there's no going back to the standard 3-6 button controller.

wow, how good is the signal? does it cut out if the IR isn't pointed directly at the receiver?

If you're close enough to the system, you can point the controller at an almost 90-degree angle and still get a signal.

I prefer the 3 button pad. I think it's the most comfortable. I only use the six button pad when it's requied or at least when it's more practicle (i.e. street fighter II).

The six button pad is awesome - The D-Pad is very smooth and I use it instead of the standard 3-button controller.

I will say 6-button, but I remember when I first got a 6-button controller, I wasn't used to it. The shape and the start button placement were odd to me at the time. But once I got used to it, I found a 3-button controller difficult to play with!

I prefer the standard 3-button controller. I only use a 6er if the game requires it.
