Not really. I was just thinking how laughably hypocritical it is that a shop clerk is whining about people having 'dibs' on something and not giving him chance to buy it for himself, but then will only turn around and call 'dibs' on items from under the counter for himself without giving anyone else a chance to buy it for themselves.

It's okay if you do it, you work there! Can't get that DVD box set from Blockbuster? Sorry, the drone behind the desk wanted it: tough luck, buddy. Limited run? Nah, they're on his eBay account now.

The problem wasn't that he stuck to it, it was why he did it. He wasn't doing it to be a good manager, he was doing it as a "wah wah, I missed out on a game I wanted so you have to too" thing. That's why I was the most pissed about it, he was taking out his frustration at me when it was his fault for not standing up the last time. However, under further inspection, I can see another reason for wish list dibs as (at least now) we get 25% off instead of the normal member 10%, so if he was trying to buy Chrono Trigger for $110 with 25% off instead of just 10% off, thats a significant chunk of change. In this case, however, I would've gladly paid the $20 with no deductions to have finally gotten Contra Force, but, since they had to dick with me and the wish list dude didn't call, I got the game and I bought it with my 25% off discount. Contra Force for $15, not bad, not bad at all.

I don't think its hypocritical at all. Like I've said in previous posts in this thread, half of the reason for working at a video game store is for the discount and/or getting first chance at all the cool stuff thats traded in. My first job started out at $7 working for Super 1 price checking other stores. It sucked and had no advantages like discounts and obviously no dibs since its a damn food store. However, I got paid more than normal to compensate. Rewind a few years to when minimum was $5.15 here (I think thats what it was when I started at Super 1) and I would damn sure want a discount and dibs to make it worth working just as hard at the counter of a video game store.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, I don't agree with eBay hoarding and hate anyone who does it. Those fuckers ruin collecting for everyone and force people to pay eBay prices because they take all the existing stock of anything selling for less than that. Neither me or the other collector resell anything we buy, its all for us and our collections, it doesn't get any more pure than that. The ONLY games I have EVER sold (actually traded) was a Sega RAM cart CIB (didn't have a Sega CD at the time), The Great Waldo Search for NES (terrible game), and Baby Boomer for NES (also terrible). The RAM cart was given to me and I bought Waldo and Baby Boomer knowing they were somewhat valuable. The key difference is that those games suck, so the only people wanting those are completionist collectors. At the same time, I have passed on Zelda and Mega Man games at great prices because I hoped someone else would find them and appreciate buying them at a good price. Then again, eBay fuckbastards probably took them all.

oh, and just thought I'd throw this out there, when I said Chrono Trigger for $110, I meant COMPLETE, not loose, jesus that would be a rip off if it was loose.

Ahh, the sounds of a soul who has never worked retail. You truly are a fortunate one.

Suppose we replace the phrase "first dibs" with "getting items for cost"...which is an employee perk at some places. Do you sit and complain that employee's get ___ item for cost while *PAYING CUSTOMERS* have to pay more? Then you'd just sound like a bitchy, crybaby customer.

Every retail establishment I have worked at, my gf has worked at, and my friends have worked at, has had an "employee hold" system. And in the eyes of the store, they don't care if an employee buys it or if a customer does...as long as someone buys it.

And this whole "clerks feel they are entitled" or "why should they get perks" attitude will never fly with *anyone* who has spent any significant time in a retail job.
