It is not broken and not random, unless your controller isn't working properly, e.g. if the buttons are worn out.

The jumps [at the pier] you've mentioned can be made safely with lots of practice. Even without playing the game for a year or two I can still do them properly.

It also helps to use the 'higher jump' magic.

While there's no easy way to put out that jump at the pier (stage 7), the secret is to time your double jump perfectly. Don't activate it as soon as you can, but wait a micro-second, and it should give you a little more distance to reach the other side.

It is broke. There was once where I wanted to jump across and he would just do a normal jump and I fell into a pit not once but like 5 times in a row. At first I thought maybe you had to time it but it acts like it does it random.

That and there was once I couldn't make the jump towards the factory stage on 3-2.
