    Default Truxton better than MUSHA?

Knowing the rep MUSHA has, perhaps this is heresy, but after having recently acquiring a copy of MUSHA, while it is easily technically more impressive than Truxton in every way, it does not have that "come back and try again" quality that all great shooters have (at least, not for me).

Truxton is quite hard, but not usually cheap, so it makes me want to come back for more. The level design, weapon choices and powerup system are all well done. MUSHA's powerup system seems a bit bizarre and there are weapons that I have to go out of my way to avoid because they seem useless. The three weapons in Truxton each have their pluses and minuses, so it seems like Truxton has more strategy and flexibility as to how you approach each level.

Also, Truxton has limited continues, which makes it a bit of a man's game to have to finish. I feel like any shooter worth its salt has to have a challenging set limit of continues. It appears MUSHA will let you continue indefinitely.

I haven't gotten very far into MUSHA and have given much more play time to Truxton (although I haven't finished it), but Truxton always calls me back and MUSHA doesn't. I was wondering if it was just me.

I enjoy the Genesis' rendition of Truxton's Level 1 BGM. It's so......1989-y and........launch title-y. But I like the PC Engine's rendition much better. Either way, the game's a bore. The BG's lack variety. I think I heard that the Genesis Truxton is only a whopping 2 MEGA POWER.........correct me if I'm wrong.

I actually enjoy both a bunch, in a death match I don't know which I'd pick since they're both at the top of the list but I don't think MUSHA is the be all end all of shooters that everyone makes it out to be. Galactic Attack (Saturn) and Mars Matrix (DC) kill it, and I also like Blazing Lazers on the TG16 better.

At least there's some Truxton love out there I don't own them anymore, but haven played both Galactic Attack and Mars Matrix. Both are great vertical shooters. My preference is actually for horizontal shooters, though I liked a well designed shooter regardless of orientation (call me equal opportunity).

Blazing Lazers is the best vert scroller I've played, so I agree with you there. It's just flat out fun.

Dunno about the game size. I'm sure it's small as it does look early-launch and, as you point out, has pretty basic graphics. Still, the graphics are clean, and to me, appealing. Also, I was comparing gameplay, not graphical and technical prowess. Obviously, MUSHA wins there. I just have more fun with Truxton (thus far).

MUSHA is the end all of shooters on the Genesis followed by Thunder Force IV and Thunder Force III. I don't think any of the weapons in the game are useless, nor do I think the power-up system is weird. It's just you my friend.

I'm a big fan of TF III. I like TF IV as well, but the slowdown in the game puts it below TF III IMHO.

The thing I don't like about the MUSHA power up system is collecting those little pills. It's a bit distracting. I'm not a big fan of the "pick up your powerups" in general, but making you shoot them out of something and then catch them takes that somewhat annoying convention even further. You have to uncover your powerups in Truxton, but they are stationary, so there's no chasing.

Blazing Lazers is a great game (as mentioned) and does have the "chase a power up" design, so it doesn't necessarily ruin a game, but again, MUSHA takes it a step further and I find it distracting to the core task of blowing s#*t up.

If a game has infinite continues then just self-limit the number of continues. That's what I do. I may limit myself to say 3 continues.

Sure it's harder than MUSHA, but Truxton for the MD is a poor game.

However, Robo Aleste is better than MUSHA. If you have the chance to check it out don't miss it.

And I thought my "SOR2 = Overrated" thread hit a nerve.

Truxton IS by far the most mediocre shooter on the Genesis. I would have a more entertaining time staring at the MUSHA box art then actually playing Truxton.

I think that they are both decent games, but I think I would rather play MUSHA. They both have things that are good about them, but MUSHA is more classic and I felt that Truxton was a bit too cliche'.

I should say that my screenname here lends me to know next to nothing about shooters.

The only two shooters that I will always play loyally are Vapor Trail and Robo Aleste.

Haha! That game is not mediocre. The game is hilarious! If I reviewed it I probably would have had a hard time giving it a score at all, let alone a mediocre one.
