The PS2 version on the Sega Classics Collection is miles better than the Saturn version. I own both versions, and the Saturn game isn't anywhere near the arcade game. The PS2 version is arcade perfect.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

The 32x version was pretty awesome at the time. Too bad that was one of the only decent games for that system.

have to agree the 32x version was pretty spot on, looks good sounds ok but the gameplay speed is there! not played the saturn version but i have heard quite a few people say they prefer the 32x version of virtua racing and vitua fighter over the saturn.

Time Warner Interactive did the Saturn version if I remember correctly. The 32X version ('Virtua Racing Deluxe') was done by AM2. - Yet another reason why I hated the 32X...
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

face it, Saturn was just poorly designed and managed.

no need to rag on the 32X.

Lol I remember when Virtua Racing first came out on the Mega Drive, I was absolutely blown away by the graphics, I was only about 7-8 at the time and after playing Super Monaco GP for years, to see a 3D F1 game was unbelievable. Still like Super Monaco GP more though, the longevity of the career mode in Super Monaco GP just keeps you coming back for more.

The Genesis game continues to amaze me, what a piece of work it was. When I first saw that game back when it came out...I couldn't believe my precious Genesis could do it.

Honestly I think the Genesis version plays a bit better than the others, and I think it's pretty close to the arcade version. (wasn't the added stuff in the 32x version new, and not present in the arcade?)

The colors are limited, but it really does seem to be a pretty authentic port.

    Arcade gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkw1zleabXQ

And the Saturn version doesn't look right at all:

    Arcade:

    Genesis, 32x, Saturn

Yes, the 32X version adds the different cars: the touring-car one that fishtails a lot, and the 'Prototype'. Plus there's the one bonus track.

Did anybody else notice the 'KNUCKLES' sign in the desert track? You have to go around the course the wrong way, but (from memory) it's where the track splits in two and one path heads through a tunnel.

Very much a fan of the brightly-coloured, polygonic look of Virtua Racing - especially the Best Lap 2 theme that plays at 1:03 in the linked video!

    I like the prototype car.

Yes... that's one of the things I like to do on race games: go the wrong way and try to find different routes than the one you're "supposed" to take. That's why Burnout Paradise is my current favorite race game - it actually encourages you go anywhere in the game.

Yet somehow they made Sega Rally NLE. If Sega had done a port of Virtua Racing for the Saturn, it could've been high-res, 60fps and had more draw distance than the arcade. Even an early rushed port on par with Virtua Fighter would've trumped the released versions. At least the Saturn and 32X versions add new content.

The Saturn version may not be anything like it should be, but if you compare it to the 32X version on real hardware, it really is noticeably more powerful. The number of polygons is at least as proportionate to the 32X VR as 32X VR is to the Genesis version. I guess it's kinda like Virtua Fighter Saturn vs Virtua Fighter 32X on a technical level. The Sega ports have better polygon artists, which helps the lower number of polygons look better proportionately.

Still pics don't give a good enough impression of what's really going on with each version.

The 32X version will always be my favorite.

Would that show up on the mirrored tracks?

I don't even know if the Saturn version had mirrored tracks, because I was so bored with the title that I never played it to the end.

I think Black Tiger is right on target regarding the different versions of Virtua Racing.

BTW the original MODEL 1 arcade version runs at 30 FPS, while the PS2 version runs at 60 FPS.
