I didn't occur to me to normalize my recordings, so thanks for doing that.
Your Model 1 recording sounds marginally cleaner than mine. I wonder if I'm getting some line noise. What volume level do you have the headphone slider set at? I've got it maxed, but I wonder if I'm slightly overdriving the output.

This is kind of fun for me, so I'll probably do a few more comparisons. I'll also post my original unedited recordings of the two consoles (normalized ) to make it easier for folks to compare them with their own recordings. I'll do the same for the comparisons that I've already posted.

EDIT: I've revised my earlier recordings to normalize them. I've also changed the interval each console plays to 10 seconds. I've also posted the original recordings from both consoles.

    Hello,
I just brought an old model 1 (with the High def graphics label on the top) from my cousin's house. I was testing it today, and noticed that there is a hissing sound in the headphone jack, when the volume slider is turned up it becomes less noticeable but is there for sure.
I've tested it without a cartridge and notice that if the volume control is ully turned up there is a more notorious sound .
The genesis has an expansion slot too, dont know if that indicates if it belongs to some specific model, also dont know if this is a case of a cheap circuit or if the headphone jack is in bad shape.
I read that Ace said that he can help with looking at the back of the system? can I attach some pictures for you Ace?

    thanks for the help

That hissing is caused by poor parts used in MD... the headphone amp is a rather low quality amp originally designed for portable audio cassette players, and amps own hiss is shadowed by tapes hiss, that is not the case in MD since the sound chips have relatively clean output.

The picture is ONLY required for units that have NO High Definition Graphics writing on the unit. Taking a picture of the back of a High Definition Graphics Model 1 is pointless, as they all look the same. Unless the top was swapped on yours? Let me see your unit.

Certainly you may: juvenile humor, à la Beavis and Butthead. Your ending line was practically right out of the movie (see entry 1 here). I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I was blatantly off-topic, but I didn't mean to offend.

That's a genuine High Definition Graphics unit. I think something's wrong with either dust buildup on the volume slider or a faulty audio cable that's causing.

Right.... don't ever do it again. The last thing I need is some stupid comment. May I remind you I'm short-tempered; I absolutely HATE stupid comments like that. And it certainly doesn't help that I'm in a pissy mood today(DO NOT MAKE ANY STUPID COMMENTS ABOUT THIS!).

    Ok,
so then the only way to see what's really going on, or to be able to clean the volume slider is from the inside... I suppose.
I have cleaned it from the outside but no results.
    thanks!

You'll have to clean it from the inside. Just take the top off the console.

@Ghaleon: (at least I'm in a better mood today) Never mind the Internet being serious business, EVERYTHING is serious business to me. My sense of humor is very limited.

Really, though, what was the point of that?

Welp bought a new AC adapter and I'm still getting that BRRRRR noise.
What a waste. I guess I have no choice now but to buy a new Genesis. Hate these damn things.

You can try that, but I doubt it's going to change anything. I noticed with my early non-TMSS Japanese Mega Drive that sound output varies a bit even among the early model 1s.

Yeah, it is fun. I plan on doing some more recordings myself when time permits.

Is there a way to fix a model 1 by replacing the amp ? - are there other ways to improve sound with a model 1 ? How does modding a model 1 compare to your CCAM for model 2 ?
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.
