I know of no direct replacement amps to put into MD1, and MD1 won't sound as good as MD2 even with audio mod due to MD2 ASIC sound being superior to discrete chip sound... you get clarer sound, but you'll be having lot of quantization noise which is filtered out to some extent without mods....

PepsimanVsJoe, if you have a Model 1 Genesis that doesn't show the PRODUCED BY OR UNDER LICENSE FROM SEGA ENTERPRISES LTD. screen, be careful what power supply you use on it. Those particular consoles are EXTREMELY picky about what power supply is plugged in. What are the power specs on the new power supply you bought?

Off topic? In a Sega-16 thread?? Breaking the law! Breaking the law!
They show the Beavis & Butthead movie all the time, but never put the original series on MTV - which I find somewhat sad.

Uh, that's all. Sorry - carry on.

I recently bought a modded HD model 1 off ebay and can say that the sound quality is crystal clear compared to the model 2 I had used in previous years. There's no doubt, at all, about the superior sound capabilities of the first gen rendition from my own personal experience.

Gamegenie, he obviously doesn't mean audio modded, there's no such thing for the HD model one. (only the fianal M1's with VA-7 board use the ASIC, and are very similar to the VA-0/1 M2's in most other ways, except for the wider board and headphone jack)

It must be modded in some other way, like standard RCA a/v ports or S-Video.

It's s-video and stereo jack modded. Still it brings out the perfection of the sound chip more clearly.

It is all about preferences. The consoles were designed for cheap mass production, especially the later ones, to be connected to a standard TV, mostly in childrens' rooms. Surely Sega could have done a better job and still be cheap (I guess) but in the end.. who actually cared about these audiophile aspects back in 1994? You can hardly hear any difference when the sound is coming from a TV speaker.

But the problem is obvious. You do not play the games anymore. So you concentrate on "audiophile" aspects of a system that was never designed to be "hifi".

Before I read anything about sound variations between models, it was noticeable to be during the 2000's while playing games on my TV that my model 1system had a buzzing sound over the audio.

It was also very obvious to me bitd how blurry rf and composite video output was. I wasn't a videophile, just a teenager who loved video games.

I wasn't an audiophile back in 1993. I just noticed that my friend's model 1 did not sound as good as my model 1, and my brother's model 2 sounded AWFUL. It was impossible to not notice that. The difference is so huge you'd have to be deaf to not notice.

The difference is not MP3 vs CD, it's someone farting over the phone vs live music at an opera house.

The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

Urgh... That's one thread that did not need necro. I think its pretty obvious for everyone at this point that early model 2 has significantly inferior audio than model 1 ( minus VA7 ).
The difference is much less pronounced for later model2 ( Va2 to Va4 ), which is why I think this was a controversy at some point, but it is still inferior.

As i said it is about preferences. Someone just plays the game and does not care about frequencies and hiss... And that's pretty much all I will add to this topic since everyting has been thought over and said dozens of times.

In this case it has nothing to do with preferences. If someone prefers muffled and distorted audio, they can. However audio quality is not something to be evaluated in subjective terms, it is rather measured.
If they simply do not care for the difference, then they do not care about this thread either.

I refuse to play carts on my X'eye, Genesis Sega CD 2 and Nomad because the audio is obviously better on my Genesis 1 HDGs.

Ugh, now I feel really bad that my original Genesis and Sega CD were stolen, not knowing better, I replaced them with model 2 versions of both...
