Back in December 1991, I chose the Sega Genesis over the SNES after some decision making about which 16-bit system to buy. It was a great decision. Even though about a half year later I bought a SNES, the time I spent playing it didn't come close to the time I spent on the Genesis. I was never a Mario fan and the Sonic's had me addicted. The sports games were also addicting - even till today - I love playing the early Maddens, NHL's, FIFA's, Montana's, and PGA's. Sports games have no appeal on the SNES for me (I do play Madden '95 on the SNES once in a while though, but it's choppy as hell and the usual control issues that many SNES games have) and usually play a Genesis Madden as a followup). Many more excellent shooters on the Genesis compared to the SNES too. I could never get used to the SNES controllers, they just cramped by fingers and could not get used to the button configuration.
By the way, I sold all of that original SNES stuff (system and games - all in the box) back in 1994 for cheap but have regained all of it back in recent years, and then some, including two brand new "mini SNES's" and play the stuff occassionally and to have as a collection, but my Genesis collection is many times bigger and more valuable.
