I don't remember any of my friends taking part in the Nintendo vs Sega war, granted the 16-bit war was pretty much over by the time I was in school, but even for the 5th gen not a lot of Saturn Vs N64, though given the Saturn's situation that's understandable. The only friends I knew with sega stuff had lots of Nintendo stuff too. I did know a fair number of people that were in the PlayStation vs Nintendo "war" but not Sega.
Yeah, well if you've got NES or SNES stuff there's a good chance they're living in yellowing harmony...Now my systems all live in a yellow submar- er, in harmony.I know ours are, though not as bad as some. (and our second NES is uneffected)
By the time the 16bit war was over, I had gotten over my console fanboyism. As such, the whole PlayStation vs Saturn vs N64, XBox vs PS2 vs Gamecube, Dreamcast vs PS2, and whatever other couplings there are, passed me by. My friends at the time were getting past it as well by then, so for me, the whole console war mentality was pretty much just during the 8 and 16bit eras. However, there certainly was some fanboyism going on around me after that period.
People damn near comparing the PS1 to second coming of Christ, store clerks trying to one-up each other with system specs, people saying a game sucked because it was on the ________ system... you know, the typical kind of stuff. Even saw people who would play a game on a given system, have fun, then say that system sucked barely five minutes later. It was like watching some weird neurosis. Granted, I never saw anything as bad as some of the bizarro world stuff you can find on the Web, but it was still around when I'd go into a game store.
And for the record, my NES and SNES are still their lovely gray selves![]()

I will not deny my love for the SNES. Metroid, Yoshi's Island, Zelda ALTTP, Chrono Trigger, Contra III, Final Fantasy 3, Megaman X, Actraiser, these are some of the best games ever made. I got my SNES the christmas after it's release, and while Joe Redifer's Genesis definitely has more experience, that SNES is certainly up there. That being said, I still love the Genesis. Genesis was all about action, it was where all the hard games lived. Genesis had Streets of Rage 2 dammit! SNES might hold your hand, but Genesis would just bitch slap the hell out of you. If SNES was Leggo, then the Genesis was G.I.-fucking-Joe.
Same here... First I owned SNES specifically for Mario Paint.. and I played that for hours and hours... (guess what I'm a graphic designer now. And play in a band! Go figure) And my friend next door had a Genesis... And yeah sure his Mortal Kombat had blood... but looked like shit! My Mortal Kombat was beautiful!! But when I heard about Mortal Kombat CD!!!! I had to get a Genesis and a Sega CD! And boy was I disappointed! I was telling all my friends (OH MKCD is gonna be so kick ass! All the guys are going to be super smooth and animated!) But that's ok.. I have tons of hours on Sewer Sharks (which is good I'm sorry it's damn good fun!) And Terminator for SegaCD was super kick ass.. Fucking difficult but a killer game! I'm just starting to relive those days recently. Collecting ALL systems! Just recently got a SegaCDX & 32x and SNES Mini!! I love them all...
Total systems 15 NES, SNES Mini, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Sega Genesis model 1, Sega CD model 2, Sega CDX, Sega 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast, 3DO, XBOX, XBOX 360, PS2!! They are all in harmony! Except for the gamecube and genesis and sega cd, the rest are all displayed in my living room all hooked up and ready to play! I take turns playing all of them! Right now i play alot of Wii and SegaCDX!
SNES and Genesis: The ultimate tag team against modern gaming mediocrity!
i recently got a snes with super mario all-stars+super mario world , super punch-out and generation x , i must say the sound and picture is much better on my snes then my genny v7.
The VA-7 model 1 genesis has some of the worst stock audio output there is (luckily there's a great mod to correct this), not sure on the composite video encoder for that model though. (if it's that crap Samsung one.... )
I haven't done it, it's TmEE's mod, but here: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5079 The hardware of the VA-0 and VA-1 Model 2's is virtually identical. (and have similarly crappy sound)
Oh, and I was looking arround for the different video encoders here http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7306 and noticed you mentioned you've got a CXA1145M, which will allow S-Video, pluss the simple (but TV dependent) S-Video mod in that thread.
Though at least you've got a decent composite encoder, not that crap KA2195 Samsung chip on some Model 2's, not only the worst composite quality, but there's no S-Video possible.
You also mentioned RGB, which those locky Europeans get through an SCART cable. You can make (or buy) an adaptor to component video from analog RGB though, or you could use some old computer monitors (Amiga monitors, and I think some old PC monitors too) will accept the Genesis's RGB signals, modern VGA monitors will not as the freqency range the Genesis RGB uses is too low.
I was another one who had both.
I had an NES as a kid and the neighbors had the Master System.
I loved playing Double Dragon at their place!
Later on I got a SNES and Genesis in the same year.
I had to have Street Fighter II,Zelda 3,Super Metroid and I had to get Thunderforce III and Sonic!
I had to have both. The competition made for some of the best games of all time.
Its not quite the same nowadays.
Genesis and SNES will be the console war that will never end, simply because of how even the playing field each system is on. For example:
Genesis-
Faster Processor
Able to do Voices easily.
Better 6-button controller
Better Sports games
Larger Library of Games
SNES-
Better Sound quality
Better Graphics
More RPGs
Mode 7
It can just go on and on, until it simply comes to preference of games. I prefer the Genesis because that's what I grew up on. I bought a SNES about 5 years back, and I like the system, but it doesn't get nearly as much play as my Genesis does. I don't think they'll ever really live in harmony, except maybe on the Virtual Console.
