Hello folks, this is My first time posting here (Though I've been lurking for years, just haven't had anything to contribute).
I know it's been asked before, but I haven't seen an answer so I'll ask again:
Does the GENmoblie output stereo sound out it's headphone jack? I can deal with the inaccurate sound reproduction and slight game incompatibilities, but no stereo sound would unfortunately be a deal-breaker for Me. Hell, good stereo output (and clearer composite-out) are the reasons I finally de-commissioned My model 2 unit and started using an HD Graphics, TMSS model 1.
Nope, mono sound.
A lot of the stuff you mentioned is fixed/monitored by li-ion circuits (which is why li-ion battery packs usually come with PCBs mounted to them). Yes, they are very sensitive, and that's why these PCBs are necessary for all series-celled Li-ion batteries and (most of them, esp. the good ones) will constantly monitor lower threshold voltage, discharge and charging current rates, etc. So if a batteries voltages goes below the threshold the PCB cuts it off. This is how most all li-ion batteries on the market are protected.
Li-ion is sensitive to temperature like all batteries, a little bit moreso yes, but it takes a large variation in temperature to really destroy one. Li-poly is a little more sensitive here too.
That said, a lot of these PCBs go faulty, especially in high discharge applications like laptops or where manufactures are cutting costs. However, in an application like a portable system or cell-phones, especially when they are charged and discharged often, li-ion is a wonderful alternative to other battery forms out there since it has (with li-poly) the highest power density-to-weight ratio. So you get the longest life for size/weight of any battery except li-poly. But an li-ion battery is only as good as it's protection circuitry and manufacture. Judging from GBA SP and cell phones (similar apps) the Li-ion batt sounds great for this.
yeah, the Nomad D-pad is something phenomenal. Nothing has ever come close IMHO, except Neo-Geo CD pads (and they break very quickly since the button contacts degrade).No oddly position buttons, no crappy emulated stuff, and probably the best dpad out of these options too.
I would say Nomad is the best official alternative, homemade portables (like Radicas or even the CDX one I made if you don't mind the weight) are the best overall. but price/time is going to kill you on the later option.

@beastech:
Thanks for the heads up, I guess I'll be sticking to My blurry-but-functional nomad for the time being.
@segasonicfan:
Dude, Your portable CDX is awesome! I was wondering, how difficult is it working with LCD screen modules? I've been wanting to retro-fit My nomad with a modern screen, but, to be perfectly honest, I don't have any idea on how to actually DO it.![]()
Thanks! My CDX portable was always a love/hate thing online because a lot of people didn't like the ghetto-made case for it. but it worked great and was a dream to play Popful Mail on the go among other things.
Unfortunately these kind of mods take a good bit of soldering/modding knowledge. but it's never too late to start learning the stuff, I first started hacking with a Nomad and worked my way up. I suggest working on cheaper things first though because you *will* break things :P the people at benheck.com forums will help you out too.
You can find a little bit of my CDX here (scroll down) and a ton of custom made portables over here.Any links to those home mades?
To see the current Genny ones (and a lot of the Radica genny mods finished and unfinished) check out www.benheck.com (he made one called the Exodus) and the Genesis hacking section in the forums on that site.
EDIT: here's the link in the forum to all Sega portables

Here is the box video I promised. Sorry I didn't get it up yesterday.
Can anybody name the game that you can hear in the background? It starts up about halfway through.
does the genmobile come with a white string thing that holds genmobile
Nice box!
It looks so much more 'for real' than the retrogen.
I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this but why not just bring back the original Nomad instead of reinventing the wheel.
It was perfect (battery life aside). The new portables seem to lack that necessary classic Genesis D-pad. If they did that i'd buy two or three of them and at this point i'm leaning toward not investing in the latest portables.
The original Nomad is pretty ugly for present times. I think this was the best way to resurrect the Nomad. I still can't get over that we got 2 Nomads in 2009. I'm still speechless.
