Does it have to be a dedicated game console or can computers count? If the latter, I'd probably go with PC for #1. (and similarly, I'd immagine this category would open this up for C64/Amiga fans, etc)

If I had to go for a single OS, probably MS DOS, old DOS games are great, X-Wing's one of my favorite games of all time. (big space.flight sim fan along with adventure games -especially graphic adventures, so naturally the PC is a great platform for this) Since Win9x (especially 95) generally had little problem running DOS games (w/out emulation), I'd rather include that too. (biggest problem tends to be with sound compatibility -on 98, and VDMSound fixed that, when I was running my old Celeron board, VDMSound worked pretty well too with XP, not so much with the Athlon XP, not sure if it's the CPU, chipset, or some update, but XMS memory won't work with VDMSound, and Doom runs really weird)

We grew up with Nintendo, so those are the consoles I've been exposed to the most. (perfect age for the N64 in particular), but going from the consoles we owned growing up it'd have to be:

    1.SNES
    2.N64
    3GameCube
4.NES (3 and 4 are really close though)
    5.Wii (also close)

Then the Atari 2600 (didn't actually get it set up until mid 2000 though), not sure wheter I actually like it more than any of the above... The Dreamcast might be as well, but I never really played it enough (no freinds had it, mostly played at store displays) Even less exposure to the saturn, though 1 freind did own it, never got to play it much.

I played the Genesis a bit growing up, but not really enough to get a good feeling for it other than that I remember how weird I thought the controllers looked (big with the 3-button, and odd button layout for the 6-button -same for saturn- this was before we even had an SNES -in 1996)
Playing it now, and a bunch via emulation, I'm liking it more and more (and the Sega CD), especially the feel of the 3-button controller. (really fits my hads well)

I don't know if the 2600, DC, Saturn, or Genesis+CD should really go into my next 5 down... The 2600 and Genny+CD are somewhare toward the middle of the above, so I don't know. (I still seperate them as they're ones I didn't play much growing up, or in the 2600's case, not until it was very old already)

As for least favorite, as far as mainstream console go, probably the PlayStation, never really care for it, and got plenty of experience playing it, but I really don't care for it that much. PS2 is OK though, probably like it similar to the GameCube or Xbox, but I never really got attached to it. (and the lack of 4 onboard controller ports seemed rather dumb to me after the N64 and Dreamcast) The Xbox is one that I played a ton at one of my freind's, lots of good times. (though I didn't own it myself until recently, and it's not set up)

All that said, I'm not a huge fan of 2D platformers, and I generally prefer the Sonic games over mario, though collecting the emeralds is a bit annoying at times. But Yoshi's Island was really fun (definitley in my top 5 on the SNES, and top 5 2D platformers overall), Star Fox is probably y favorite, though it really pronounces how awkward the L and R buttons are (almost as much as Street Fighter II), though the roll controlls on Star Fox are rather difficult emulated as well, so it's not just the controllers. I love flight/combat sims as I mentiond, but also rail shooters (not scrolling shooters so much, though they're fun), I just love th music and overall gameplay in the original Star Fox though, the framerate is tolerable and I'm kind of fond of simple shaded polygon graphics. (flat or gouraud shaded with occasional texture "decals") I kind of sucked back then though, It wasn't until I was about 14 that I really could play it well. (and beat it) Tougher than SF 64, or at least it seemed that way back then.

Panzer Dragoon would probably have been a big selling point for me for the Saturn.

    1 - XBox 360 (despite it's 'awesome' reliability)
    2 - Mega Drive
    3 - SNES
    4 - Saturn
5 - ...errrr either the PS3 or the N64 I can't decide. The Dreamcast had some awesome games too - but I hated the actual machine itself...
