I already brought this up back in that 2010 Sega console thread. (the one with the article speculating about the RingEdge board) http://sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7334
There's a lot of different stuff in those patents, and at least 3 distinct controllers, one that looks identical to the 3D controller, a slightly different one, similar to the 3D controller(the first one pictured in this thread), and that 2 handled one.
Who knows what they're up to, it could have be a project that hs yet to solidify, but the dates on those patents is very recent.

Also, they seem to have a ton of peripherals, particularly relative to that second controller I described. (it really is similar to the old saturn controller, but lacks the handels, being rounder, and somewhat smaller)
Again, the dates being recent doesn't mean that these designs are actually recent. I'm sure Nintendo and Sony have patents for controller designs they never brought to market.
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.
What I heard about this was that it was supposed to be for an arcade system that acted more like a game kiosk you see for the 360 in Wal-mart. Possibly a modified RingEdge or Ringwide board. I am open to the possibility of there being a new console being made since the losses by Sega don't seem to coincide with the game and arcade sales. So a lot of money is going somewhere.
I think it's prototypes of a Wii controller.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.
Then we set about developing killer games.

I've seen this patent a little while ago. It caused a bit of a commotion at the Sega of America forums. I have no idea what its supposed to be but it sure looks like they are trying to do something with wireless and motion controls.
Why do people assume that controller = console?
They might just be releasing a controller accessory and are refiling these trademarks of the old designs.
They already did it with the Saturn controller, for example; as well as various types of arcade sticks.
Oh, but hope is all there is in terms of hardware. I hope the "RingEdge"/"RingWide" board pulls through, at least.
P.S.> We're forgetting about the memory card. Once more, IMO, they may be planning to release another Sonic title, this time as a multi-console game, with SEGA's own wireless controller resembling the Saturn's original 3D controller design, equiped with motion sensors to bypass even that of the Wii and even a redesigned VMU to come with it.
Yeah, though the motion controll tink shown for the second (round) controller, seems a bit odd if it's that old. (though they could have been for a cancelled Dreamcast Successor or something)
Although, it also strick me that all 3 of these controllers are wired, which would imply that they are older.
Wait a tick...
...WHAT'S THIS?
Too bad it's a fake. What's worse: The actual Controller and (What looks like a) memory card resemble the recent issued patents. That's too bad.

The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...
Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

That looks cool. Like you said, too bad.
I know what the SEGA Voyager fake-out is missing on the ad:
"SEGA VOYAGER: Play your Dreamcast, Saturn and Sega CD titles all in one Console!"
...Followed by the chorus: "SEGA."
