I explained to my professor that I had a business meeting today and would not be able to attend his class. He immediately berated me, demanded that I show up, demanded that I inform my employer that I am no longer to be ''needed'' during his class hours etc. In fact, part of me strongly believes that he didn't believe me.

Well it culminated in him actually PHONING my place of employment (I stupidly told the class where I worked) and actually asking if I was there.

I'm absolutely livid, it not only was humiliating at my work place, and TOTALLY unprofessional, what right did he have to do that?

I'm strongly considering taking legal action if I have any recourse, this is absolutely inexcusable.

Am I wrong?

This professor sounds a little out there. You would think that if a student had the maturity to tell the professor before hand that he will be absent one day the teacher would be understanding about it. Especially since he could just tell you what he will be covering and the chapters to read in the book in order to catch up.

But what's the difference if you miss one class or not? In college you can miss as many as you please. Only in certain colleges they have absent limits and that limit is up to 5 so who cares if you miss one day of class. What do they expect no one to ever sick?

I wouldn't worry about it. Just ignore him Tanegashima, he seems like hes got some issues. Most likely stemming from being a utter failure who couldn't make it in the real world so he had to cowar inside his university forever.

Call him an asshole to his face. True, he could give you a failing grade but it's probably not worth putting up with the guy's shit anyway. And as for legal recourse, don't bother with civil actions. If you can press criminal charges, do so. Civil actions mean nothing.

Are you serious? Everything you just said would probably be the WRONG thing to do.

As for the professor, talk to him about it, tell him you were upset by what he did, and see if he apologizes.

I just wouldn't worry about it that much. That guy is obviously a total ass. Some people just get a hard on from being a complete ass.
Legal actions wouldn't help the situation at all. He would probably be riding you're ass all they way through class. Metaphorically, of course.

I would talk to the dean. He had no right no call your work. That is completely unprofessional. You might want to look him up on ratemyprofessor.com and see if there is a pattern to his craziness.

The obvious question to ask first:
Is he a tenured prof? (I hope not, that would be too easy.)

After all, you can always leverage 'His' employment into the debate by reporting him to the appropriate board's and whatnot.

Harassment at your workplace is one thing, having exposed himself to such stupidity is another.

At this point he would be wise to submit to you a public apology. Otherwise, any misconduct/dispute regarding 'your performance in class' can be written off as some form of personal prejudice. If such a harassment on the job caused you any grief at all ... Lawsuit time, you're American. Just sue him.

I had a teacher who thought I wouldn't make it in the Air Force, hell... get past basic because I sucked at her class. She played favorites, and I wasn't one of hers... ho-hum.

She sent me an email, saying she wanted to meet with me. Whatever happened to her... I don't know, nor do I give a fuck.

I don't get what it is with professors. When you first start college, they don't give a FUCK if you go to class or do anything. They usually won't even contact you if you don't show up for a single test/day of class/whatever and just plop the F on the paper. As you move up, when they should be giving you even more freedom because you're older and more experienced, it turns back into junior high where they're up your ass about everything and take role and pickup homework almost every class period.

Where do you work, if you don't mind my asking (don't have to give a name necessarily, the gist of the place would be fine, like if it was Subway you would just say a "Sub sandwich shop")? That might have changed how he felt in terms of the authenticity of the statement. I would say lots of dishonest people probably screwed things up for you, just like many professors refuse to accept doctor's excuses because allegedly too many people get them when they weren't really sick. I had a professional ethics teacher that was especially anal about that, somewhat ironically as well considering I think it's pretty unethical to not excuse someone for actually being sick.

Too often I hear students do nothing but complain about a professor only to give him a good evaluation. He was disrespectful and extremely unprofessional. Nail him for it.

yeah, I want to fucking punch people that give shitty teachers good reviews. You don't sign your name on it retard, disguise your handwriting and say what needs to be said.

I always slam crappy teachers. I have had a few make personal attacks. At the UofA you don't have to put your name on the reviews anyways. School costs way to much and is difficult enough without insane professors to put up with it.

Don't talk to him about it or make a complaint in any way, in fact let the whole thing die down. Pretend you actually are cool with the dude and make sure other students in your class think you like him, say he is hard but fair or some crap. Do a little reconnaissance work, find out what he drives. On a hot day he might leave the window down a little on his car. Casually walk by and toss some drugs and porno mags into his vehicle so that it is in plain view on the seat. Go to a pay phone and call the police, use an old lady voice or a ridiculous accent and a fake name and say you were just walking by and noticed a drug deal on campus and you got the license plate # and tell em where the car is. Watch for his name in the paper and enjoy your deliciously cold revenge. Hopefully he will try and resist arrest and the cops taize him.
