    Default Thexder NEO for PSP

This remake came out of nowhere, slipped into the PSP Go! launch lineup, and ultimately sliced the balls off of any legit reason to pay 39.99 for a digital only title.

Seriously. It's $9.99 and better than most of the available titles on the PSN.

    Here's the MSDos version reviewed:

I've yet to see a better release this year on the PSP.

I think that team could even make Magmax look nice! Seriously the lasers are great, it looks like they imagined what the original would have looked like on a 16-bit console and pretended to port it to the Dreamcast era.

Mark at Classic Game Room is going to go nuts when he sees this. He loves Thexder.

Wow, I kinda want a PSP now. It looks pretty faithful to the original and I like the graphix I must say.

looks pretty cool, but I can't stand metroid-esque maze levels.

However, for anyone else that likes this, you definitely should check out Ranger X for Genesis, it's like this but with mostly linear left to right levels.

Yeah, that's exactly what I first thought of, especially after his comments about a remake. (and Thexder 95 apparently sucks)
On that note, someone really needs to educate Mark about DOSbox, for one he could recored PC speaker sounds from line out and not a microphone, and 2nd there are many other hardware configurations, in Thexder's case it supported 4 sound channels with Tandy-1000 and PC Jr. (same PSG chip as SMS I beleive)
And of course, andyting with Soundblaster/adlib is a given, but configuring an MT-32 emulator might be something worthwhile as well. (though it really wouldn't be representative for many people back in the day)

    ^ Ya,

Just imagine what they could do if they created more retro-ish games like this.....It would be amazing. Not only would it be cheap for developers but its what the fans have been demanding for years.

I hated metroid-ish games as well. I think the only game that is somewhat like that genre that I enjoyed was the original TMNT games for the NES. Other than that they all made me want to just turn off my game console, throw the game across the room, and put in a real platformer.

And Ranger-X is an amazing game. Not only are the graphics and music great but it also has a very good level design and game mechanics. The levels are not so linear that it gets boring and predictable and the action in the game keeps you coming back for more.

It's probably a candidate for one of the best 16-bit games ever created.

exactly. The original TMNT game is the only RPG-ish free roaming game I can really tolerate. I'm not sure if it's because it's TMNT or if it's because it guides you just enough to not get fully confused, but something about it keeps it playable. No doubt there are lots of "WTF?" moments, but that game was really impressive for an 8-bit game.

The original NES TMNT is certainly burned into my childhood memories. My favorite parts were the driving sequences in the party wagon, which is basically why I love Granada on the Genesis more than most shooters.

I wouldn't mind seeing that get a proper update.

if you think about it, in many ways it was almost like the first Grant Theft Auto. A 2.5 D remake with all of the glitches and wildly erratic challenge problems fixed would be incredible. Of course, they would gay it up with the modern TMNT art style...makes me want to throw up.

    awesome:

I remember when I was little I used to bug out during the part where you had to defuse all the under water bombs. The timer and the music used to drive me crazy. As a kid I only got as far as Shredder's level but died in that hallway with all the guys that float with lazer rifles in the technodrome. Just recently I beat it on an emulator and still had a great time.

Sometimes I think that the NES TMNT game wasn't really meant to be a TMNT game at all. Kind of like what they did with Mario 2 and Doki Doki Panic.

Or it was just developed by people who never seen or heard of the TMNT before.

I heard the reason it's so weird is because it's based on the comic book rather than the TV show. Apparently, all or most of the characters were featured in the comic books. From TMNT II: The Arcade Game on, it was based more on the TV show. I never cared much for TMNT 2 on the NES, but holy shit is TMNT III: The Manhattan Project fucking awesome.

That's interesting I might have to research that because some of the characters in the game looked pretty wild.

    This game is fucking "crack".

Easy mode is forgiving and useless, but normal mode is fucking old school. Thexder NEO's basic as hell, and fucking good.
