Default Just got a free PSP (1000 model), but it needs a bit of fixing-up. Advice?

I'd never owned a PSP before, so its a treat. But, according to my cousin, the battery pack's either close to dead, or I just need an AC Adapter as he didn't have one to give me. The analog noob is missing, the screen has a moderate number of scratches but nothing too bothersome, and the battery cover's kinda quick to come off.

What I want to know is:

    - Do those extended life battery packs work on the 1000 as well?

    - UMD drive lasers don't need to be cleaned periodically like CD/DVD lasers, right?

    - Can I buy a replacement analog noob?

    - Can I replace the scratched screen, and what's the usual amount for doing so?

    - I know I'm gonna have to invest a bit of $$$ to get this working, but is it worth it to instead trade this in at GS and use the store credit towards a used 2000 or 3000? Then again, I'm worried that the used PSP's sold to and by GS might have been bricked or damaged by previous owners or something......

I've seen new 2000's go for about $200 around my way, and even though the 3000's clearly the best model, I hear that it isn't as full-fledged crackable as the 1000 & 2000.

Not all 2000s can run custom firmware. Those manufactured after August 2008 have the same CPU as the 3000. Exploitable depending on firmware revisions, but nothing permanent like CFW, and nothing that can be un-bricked by anybody.

Replacement parts from hong kong can be bought cheaply enough if you're up to the task of fixing it yourself, distributors for flash carts & clones usually pick up the replacement junk.

It's $35.95 for the Original screen replacement, and $53.95 for the Slim screen, from the Canadian site I buy from. "Gamer Section." Don't know of any rival sites in USA that could cut a better buy, but that price range is probably competitive to what you should expect to pay.

lol, it's "knob" or "nub" you noob.

all you need to know about PSP:

    for modding:

get Rain's MMS Maker 5.00, though you will need to upgrade to 5.50 to play the newest games like Gran Turismo, but I don't know of any updates that work, I just tried one and I bricked (grrrr, gotta pull out my 5.00 unbricker, what a PITA)

get at least a 1GB memory stick, preferably Sony or SanDisk (eBay or Amazon have pretty good deals). I have an 8GB for games and a 1 GB that I leave unbrick data on in case I need it. You could try this one:

Go to dealextreme and buy a pandora/tool battery and soft mod away.

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12472

    for repairs:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Replacemen...ht_3028wt_1034

    or

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3373

    for batteries:

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2149

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.28773

    And for the rest:

your screen isn't scratched, the outside of your case is scratched, you can replace it (and might as well since you'll have to take it off if you need full joystick repair), but your screen is probably in A OK condition.

Screw the UMD, even if you want to collect games, it's way easier just to rip your own bootlegs or PM me for a very awesome ROM site that rarely has dead links. UMD games load slower and run the battery down faster than playing them off the MMS, not to mention you risk losing them when traveling around. To answer your question though, it is roughly the exact same thing as a CD drive, just smaller, and yes, sometimes the laser can get damaged just like any optical drive.

I don't think I need to do a full joystick repair........the analog noob is just missing. (Ever since I first read "analog nub", I've pronounced it as "analog NOOB")

Hmm, if this is the case, then it looks like I just need to get a replacement noob, and AC adapter, clean this baby up and...........sell it and use the money/credit towards getting me a PSP-2000.

    17days, check your PM box.

2000 is the way to go, just make sure everything works, ESPECIALLY the video out on the bottom which will even allow you to play video and PSX games on interlaced TVs even though PSP games and emulators need progressive scan and component cables.

There are pros and cons to each: the biggest pro for the 1000 is the IR port; with it, you can use IR keyboards. The biggest pro for the 2000 is the extra memory. Not everything uses the extra memory, but when it is used, it helps.

    1000
Pros: IR port, sturdier construction, can make Pandora Batteries, some people like the dpad better.
Cons: Half the memory of the 2000, no TV out. Little shorter battery life.

    2000
Pros: Twice the memory of the 1000, TV out, slightly better battery life, lighter.
Cons: No IR port, a little more flimsy construction, some folks don't like the dpad.

@17: You can use interlaced TV out to play PSP games and homebrew that doesn't support TV out using a plugin called FuSa. It also (usually) scales the video to the TV better than Sony's TV out as well.

I have never heard nor seen ANYONE use the IR port, EVER.

The 1000 construction is not sturdier, it's just heavier. As someone that has repaired both several times, I can tell you the 2000 is a much more resilient and reliable design.

Making pandora batteries is a moot point because you first have to have custom firmware to do it and you can buy one for $6 on Dealextreme.com and not have to mess with it.

As for D-pad, are you high? you can't even do a hadouken with the 1000 D-pad! it may feel nice and be OK for 4-way games like Pac Man and RPGs, but anyone looking to play fighting games is going to need a 2000 to go with it unless they want to try playing with the nub instead.

I've tried FuSa before, it's terrible, it didn't work with any games without freezing the PSP and looked like crap. Maybe one day it will get there, but it certainly isn't there now.

I've got two different IR keyboards (a Targus and a Palm) - I have worked on both the irkeyb drivers and pikey. Lot's of us use the IR port. The IR port is also very big with iR Shell. I was really sad to see it dropped on the 2000.

I don't think the 2000 is flimsy, just more flimsy than the 1000. I have both, and I can tell you the 1000 is indeed more sturdy, not just heavier.

I like the dpad on the 2000 better as well, but many people don't. It's more of a personal choice kinda thing.

Some versions of FuSa work better than others. Especially with some games. You might try some of the older versions if you're just trying the latest. They really should open the source on that so that more people can help work on it.

The 1000 feels sturdier and is certainly more rigid, but in terms of durability, the 2000 has it beat. The inside is much more simple and less susceptible to drop damage than the 1000. I agree, the 1000 does feel more like a quality piece, but the 2000 will survive more falls for sure.

I don't know anyone that likes the 1000 pad more unless, again, they only play 4-way games on it. The d-pad is actually the reason I never want to use my fat because it makes 8-way games and quarter circle fighting games impossible to play.
