Component cables are worth the investment. Even video with 480i will be sharper and brighter. I bought some Monster cable and my first game played was outrun 2006 coast 2 coast, immediately I could tell the text got better and noticed the picture got brighter more vivid colors. My TV can't do anything other than 480I but its great picture and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon.

For the S-video comments, it's limited to 480I, technically it can support up to around 540P but was never in the original plans so they won't let devices use it that high

Usually you would get composite/S-Video in 480i. At least that's how early DVD players used to react.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

    Totally worth it.

Huh, I seem to remember my SDTV going all crazy when I enabled progressive scan on Game Cube in S-Video, but maybe that was after we got the component cables. (does SCART RGB support 480/576p?)

One weird thing I noticed was that my freind's Xbox 360 doesn't have a setting for 480i, only 480p, 1080i, 720p, and 1080p iirc... It most definitely outputs 480i via YPbPr to his SDTV, so I'm not sure how it determines that. (or if 480p isn't really available at all in component)
