I really hate how he botched the history of video games by saying Nolan Bushnell alone created video games instead of alongside Ralph Baer.
His idea of video game history is as dumbfounded as the instruction booklet for NES Metal Gear.![]()
So people don't like his reviews ..who cares don't watch them.. if you want to talk about how much he rips off of whoever...then the guys who took his video to add their BS are ripping off of Mystery Science Theater 3000, so they are the douches now too. Nothing is original anymore..just look at all the stupid vampire movies Hollywood is shitting out.
Granted originality has become an afterthought in this day and age. Overexposure can lead to exhaustion of thought.
This guy doesn't even try and when he does his jokes aren't really funny. That is my qualms with him, that is why I rarely watch any of his stuff anymore. AVGN is okay sometimes, alot of the novelty he had with his shock humor has worn off as of recently.
On the case of vampires, the only justice that can be done with them is the movies of the 30s and 40s and castlevania. Can't say I've watched any anime with vampires, hellsing sounds interesting enough.
exactly, if Irate Gamer was a better AVGN, I'd be all for him. These guys are MST3K for bad youtube videos instead of bad black and white movies, and are hilarious IMO. Riff videos are my favorite form of comedy followed by memes. Even if there was no AVGN, I still wouldn't like irate gamer.
I've watched some irate gamer and yeah, he's not very entertaining. AVGN is okay when he's not too over the top with the cursing and shitting. No one can touch CGR, as far as I'm concerned.

Probably the best writer of bad video game reviews is SpoonyOne. The only place Spoony lacks is in interstitial scenes, which are usually just him sitting in a chair talking. I think if Spoony wrote and starred in the videos, AVGN directed, and Irate Gamer did effects, it would probably work out pretty well.
One thing that pisses me off is that IG clearly destroys some of the colletible VG stuff he has, like sawing the real Home Improvement cart in half... That would have been like AVGN sawing Texas Chainsaw Massicre in half, an awful, but rare game. (AVGN tends to use "stunt" carts instead for stuf like that, or covered with plastic wrap and such; looking at his 32x video more closely, it looks like the burning 32x was just the casing, like he kept the intrnals for spare parts)
Edit: looks like they took the video down... still I've seem a few good Irate gamer spoofs before.
This one's probably my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6l0LfdoCOs
Oh ho ho XD, if you think that's bad, check out the play value "experts"! (more accurate in general, but more authoitaive and still get a ton wrong, like not knowing that Atari Inc ceased to exist in 1984, with assets being absored into Atari Corp with Jack Tramiel and Atari Games staying with Warner -the latter being the Tengen and newer arcade games Atari)
And also, I've heard the whole Baer argument before, discounting earlier electronic games (like Space War and Tennis for 2) as they used vector displays and were thus not "video" games (video referring exclusively to a raster display). With Baer's work with Magnavox and his "brown box" game.
However, I've never heard anyone bring up Bushnell and Dabney's Computer Space for refrence, predating Pong (their "rip off" of Baer's tennis game), and being released in 1971, so it must have been in development while Baer was still experimenting with the brown box design. (granted he may have been tinkering with the brown boax earlier than Nolan and Ted started work on Computer Space)
Computer space as inspired by and derived from "Space War!" (like Asteroids and others), but was indeed raster based, which is the whole argument tied to Baer's Brown Box and associated pattents, not the tennis aspect. (I beleive many other companies producing raster based game systems also had to pay some kind of royaltees in the US until that original patent wore off)
looks like irate gamer got that first one removed
I personally never thought much of a difference between vector and raster display other than its presentation seeing most games wire composed of lines and dots.
Not that it made them less entertaining for the age but it seemed that all games of the era shared the same framework the ralph baer contributed to and in that respect at least deserves some credit.
I for one though will not believe that one man created video games all on his own. Its like saying one man created a nation overnight.
On a totally different note in less hostile territory, spoony has great videos, they tend to drag on though, my friends can't sit still of him like they do with the nostalgia critic.
Oh yeah, Baer definitely deserves respect for his contributions, don't forget the use of light gun either. I do wonder just how much Pong was inspired by the brown box though. (it would have to be the concept at most, it's not like they somehow stole/copied Baer's circuit diagrams) If anything (assuming Pong was a clone), they took the tv tennis concept and created a much more polished game than the Oddyssey was. (boundaries, built-in score and such)
And the whole raster/vector thing is more of the nittly gritty of the legal and technical disputes.
Edit: I think this is another link to that video: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/webc...rateghosts.php
Its hard to say anybody stole anything from Baer. Game clones were way too common in the day.
Here is some imagery of what that was like.

I'm all for improving a concept, like streets of rage improving the foundation final fight built. Not so easy to pick out the best since there were so many clones. Knowing that Baer went to court with alot of people.
