the original joe montana sportstalk football is pretty terrible imo the commentary and the graphics are very impressive but the gameplay is unplayably bad to me, but its sequel nfl sportstalk football 93 isnt so bad, even better is nfl 94 which has the best commentary out of the 3 with the best gameplay as well and all of the 93 rosters are intact but if you want to go even better go with college football national championships 1 and 2 where sega carried over the engine and improved it for the next two years(94/95 when they presented nfl 95/primetime/98 with a new engine from the ground up minus the commentary)
I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

Well this thread comes in handy. I've been meaning to buy a genny football game but as a European I'm fairly unfamiliar with the sport. Been doing some research and Madden '94 seemed to be a sweet deal but it almost goes unmentioned on this board. Actually, there just doesn't seem to be any general consensus here at all

Is there something wrong with Madden '94 that I'm completely missing out on? Something I perhaps can't see with my squeaky Euro-eyes and little understanding of the sport?

absolutely not!! madden 94 is bad ass! its got alot of really good teams(all of the championship teams and a few all time greatest players teams for a few select teams) my only problem is that i think ea went with a cheap battery for it because ive never been able to save my season on any of the 3 or 4 carts ive owned(unless you have to do the old nes trick and hold down the reset button while powering down hmmm) however i do think that the first bill walsh college football is better(an improved version of the exact same engine ie.. better looking sprites etc..) but if youre like me and dont really care for college football than id go with madden 94 for sure. alex burr wrote a pretty awesome review for it here:http://www.sega-16.com/review_page.p...0NFL%20'94 you should check it out. also be sure to see the (recently edited) first post in this thread and see where it ranks among every other football game on the genesis.

Avoid the Madden and Bill Walsh titles because they are all made with the cruddy EA Sports football engine. The graphics are underwhelming and the gameplay is clunky.

Instead get Joe Montana 94. The gameplay is fast and the zoom in on the receivers is really nice when running the passing plays.

Here's some footage of Montana 94. Notice the zoom-ins and how fluid the players move compared to clunky and slow movement in Madden. No comparison. Sega always outdid EA on NFL games. That is why EA bought exclusive rights to modern NFL games, because the 2K games were technically and graphically superior.

the sega titles on the genesis are a nice change of pace, i like how they are closer to a football simulation compared to the arcade style of the ea football games

I think the problem with NFL trying to gain popularity here is that us, along with France and Italy, already play a very similar sport in rugby; you won't walk into a bar and see NFL on the TV over here like you would rugby. I suspect that NFL's popularity here is limited, and if there were more than one event per year the likelihood of every game being a sellout would be much lower.
I can speak for the whole of Europe and nobody here likes American Football/Handegg.

American football is smart people's rugby, and there are smarter drawn out plays rather than guys hitting each other without pads throwing a ball backwards only, then hug it out as a group. What a joke.

Though I do agree that the word football is a joke, it doesn't have any thing to do with soccer! I use the word football for both.

im thinking youre probobly right. i dont think it is very smart of the nfl to try and expand internationally, its just too american. if anywhere they should expand more in canada, maybe a team in toronto in the future. i think that would be alot more successful than anything overseas.

My original question posed to all was basically wondering how popular the American football games are on video game consoles in Europe. Not how popular the sport is in general. Two separate and distinct topics.

I am not a fan of sumo wrestling, and we do not get any televised in USA like in Japan, but that did not stop me from buying a sumo game for Gameboy many years ago. It turned out to be pretty fun to play.

I don't get why all the Euro members hate on football so much? Have any of you actually played or seriously watched football with an open mind? Personally, I don't care for soccer but, we don't go into the soccer threads and say "american football pwnz euro football!!!"

I would love to see a Madden title include CFL teams/rules.

Agree completely. I have wanted a CFL game for many years, because
    the rules are so different.

There are "soccer" threads? Where? :/

This reminds me - my mum tells me they actually showed the Superbowl on the BBC yesterday night, meaning she couldn't watch "The Sky at Night"!

    Disgraceful!
